TWO WHEELED NEWSLETTER
APRIL 2008
Dear Friends of Two Wheeled Foundation,
Welcome Spring! Over the last month TWF has pedaled forward and the summer launch for the Cycle for Health Initiative is a go. Cambridge, Massachusetts has been chosen for TWF North American HQ; it has a history of hosting visionary start-ups and boasts two of the top Universities in the entire world. TWF board members met with the City of Cambridge Transportation Manager and Senior Economic Planner, both showed great enthusiasm for the arrival of TWF into the Cambridge community. In addition, TWF met with both Harvard and MIT students interested in the potential of pedal power for Africa.

On the right you can get a glimpse of the location for the first TWF sponsored bicycle workshop. The site in Kabale, Uganda will be managed by the Kigezi Community Project (KCP, www.kigezi.org), a community based organization fighting for better health care services in rural Uganda. Bicycles will be donated by Bicycles-for-Humanity (www.bicycles-for-humanity.org) and will end up at the Red Cross compound in the late summer or early fall. TWF will work closely with KCP to create a community bicycle workshop that has the capacity to transform recycled bicycles into ambulances and medical mobilizers. The newly remodeled bikes will become instruments of social change, increasing access to timely medical care where motorized vehicles are not available.

In other TWF news I am excited to announce that Lucy Wanjiru, Board Member of TWF, will be a special presenter at the 2008 Global Gender Equity Retreat in Kigali, Rwanda. Lucy will be delivering a speech on water and sanitation to an audience of high level global policy makers from the United Nations. We know she will represent TWF to the fullest. She has explained that the bicycle has the unique ability to empower rural woman and ease the burden of carrying water and firewood long distances. In fact, men are more willing to do these types of chores using a bicycle because riding them is prestigious in rural African communities.
Finally, I would like to send a special thanks to the individuals who reached out to TWF board members over last month. Your support keeps us going.
Kind Regards,
Joseph Agoada
